The all day workshop starts with a literary introduction to Gothic Fiction and the imagery surrounding it. We then move as a group through several creative writing exercises with the aim of creating a character from an imaginary piece of gothic fiction. The second half begins with a presentation on the origins of portrait photography relating the theory and practicee of gothic fiction to visual culture and culminating in the participants transforming into their characters for a formal portrait in a professional studio.

Developed in response to a brief for an arts festival in April 2017 under the remit ‘Women’s Writes’, the original workshop was for women only, however the nexus of the idea can be expanded for both men and women.
