Introduction to Creative Writing and Photography

Focusing on and exploring five areas of creative writing and ‘image making’ with words, connecting them with a selection of well known photographers who show similar craft in their work. Participants are provided with work books and given a selection of writing exercises and photography projects under different headings. There is a strong element of discussion and group participation.
A workshop created for ‘The School of Miniclick’ at The Photographers Gallery, June 2016

Photography and Story Telling for young adults

A discussion based workshop for young adults aged 11-15years old which explores the elements of ‘what makes a good story’, focusing on and developing ideas taken from the books and films enjoyed by the kids. Work books and writing exercises are provided to help us lead the group in the development of their own story elements, accompanied by discussions about taking photographs to illustrate their story and how to compose an image. The second half  provides the opportunity for the group to go out and take their own images which are then edited in the group to form a narrative.
Developed for the ‘Control’ exhibition by Miniclick as part of the Brighton Photofringe October 2016.

Capturing the Gothic Female

The all day workshop starts with a literary introduction to Gothic Fiction and the imagery surrounding it. We then move as a group through several creative writing exercises with the aim of creating a character from an imaginary piece of gothic fiction. The second half begins with a presentation on the origins of portrait photography and culminating in the participants transforming into their characters for a formal portrait in a professional studio.
Developed in response to a brief for an arts festival in April 2017 under the remit ‘Women’s Writes’, the original workshop was for women only, however the nexus of the idea can be expanded for both men and women.

Capturing the Spirit Side

In response to a brief given by Miniclick for their series of events, Capturing the Spirit Side has been developed to explore elements of psychic photography and writing.
Beginning with a few examples of psychic writing and exercises, the group will explore various literary examples of contact with spirits and fortune-telling. We will then look at archetype images in photography, critical theory, dream interpretation and in psychic paraphernalia such as tarot cards. Finally, the group will look at the idea of prophesy in historic, modern media and literary examples, culminating in each individual participating in an aura style portrait.

Capturing the Uncanny

The workshop will give a literary introduction to the origins and elements of The Uncanny as a theoretical and literary tool in writing, providing extracts and discussion points for the group. Writing exercises will give the group an opportunity to play with and create their own ‘uncanny’ vignettes using different thematic options.  The group will then be lead in a discussion surrounding peculiar photography and what elements in the images fit with the previously discussed points. The group will finally have a chance to create their own peculiar image in a professional photographic studio.
